Supreme Court Stays Bombay HC’s Order of Acquitting 12 Men in 2006 Train Blast Case

The Supreme Court on Thursday imposed a partial stay on the Bombay High Court’s verdict acquitting 12 men in the 2006 Mumbai train blasts case, while clarifying that the accused would not be re-arrested. The bench emphasized that the High Court’s judgment should not be treated as a legal precedent in any other case.

The apex court issued notices to the respondents while hearing the Maharashtra government’s appeal against the acquittal. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta argued that the High Court’s ruling could have broader implications for cases under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA). The court acknowledged that staying an acquittal remains an exceptional measure.(Source: KNS)
