Saqlain Yousuf, a 25-year-old from Pulwama, developed Kashmiri GPT, an AI-powered platform designed to help people communicate in the Kashmiri language, which is at risk of decline. Inspired by research showing that only 33% of people in Kashmir can read and write in Kashmiri, Saqlain left his job in Bengaluru to create this tool. The biggest challenge he faced was the lack of language models supporting Kashmiri, along with financial constraints. He built the platform on his own and introduced Roman Kashmiri for wider accessibility, including for tourists. Despite cyberattacks on his website, Saqlain views setbacks as learning opportunities. He also highlights the need for skill development in Kashmir, urging people to prioritize practical skills over degrees. Saqlain envisions expanding Kashmiri GPT into a more comprehensive application, aiming to preserve Kashmiri culture through technology. He remains hopeful for future support to grow his initiative.
