The Omar Abdullah-led government has formally proposed declaring July 13 (Martyrs’ Day) and December 5 (Sheikh Abdullah’s birth anniversary) as public holidays, pending approval from the Lieutenant Governor.
The National Conference, which regards these dates as historically significant, has initiated preparations for Martyrs’ Day commemorations at Naqshband Sahib graveyard. However, uncertainty remains over official recognition, as the LG’s office has yet to respond to the proposal.
The NC has emphasized the cultural and political importance of these dates, criticizing their earlier removal from the holiday calendar. A decision is expected ahead of July 13. (Source: KNT)
