Mehbooba Mufti Questions Farooq Abdullah’s Remarks on Pahalgam Ter’ror Atta’ck

PDP President Mehbooba Mufti criticized National Conference patron Dr. Farooq Abdullah for his remarks suggesting local Kashmiri involvement in the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. Mehbooba termed Abdullah’s statement “deeply disturbing and regrettable,” warning that it could fuel divisive narratives and stereotype Kashmiris. She expressed concern that such statements could have dire consequences, especially when Kashmiri students and traders face threats and attacks in India.

Mehbooba invoked the example of Himanshi Narwal, the widow of a security officer martyred in the attack, who appealed for communal harmony and urged citizens not to blame or target Kashmiris or Muslims. Mehbooba emphasized drawing inspiration from Narwal’s message of peace and unity.

Mehbooba’s criticism highlights the sensitive nature of the issue and the potential impact of public statements on communal relations. She urged caution and responsibility in public discourse, particularly from senior leaders. The exchange underscores the complexities of politics and public perception in Jammu and Kashmir, where statements can have far-reaching consequences. Mehbooba’s remarks serve as a counterpoint to Abdullah’s views, emphasizing the need for unity and avoiding blame.
