Kashmir Mutton Dealers Suspend Livestock Imports Over Punjab Extortion

Kashmir’s mutton dealers have declared an indefinite halt on livestock transportation from northern states, alleging systematic extortion by unauthorized contractors at Punjab’s Shambu Border and Madhavpur checkpoints. The decision, announced after emergency meetings of the Mutton Dealers Association, threatens to disrupt meat supplies across the Valley during peak demand seasons.

Association leader Mehrajuddin Ganai revealed that truckers face daily illegal levies exceeding ₹5,000 per vehicle, rendering the trade financially unviable. “For years, we’ve petitioned authorities about this organized racket targeting Kashmir-bound livestock trucks,” Ganai told *KNT*, noting that suppliers from Rajasthan, Haryana and Delhi have been alerted about the suspension.

The administration faces mounting pressure to intervene, as the stalemate could trigger meat price surges ahead of upcoming religious festivals. Dealers warn the boycott will continue until Punjab and J&K authorities coordinate to dismantle the extortion network. (Source: KNT)
