J&K Govt Replaces ‘State’ with ‘UT’ in GST Bill, Waheed Para Calls It Betrayal

Srinagar, March 25, 2025: The Jammu and Kashmir government on Tuesday tabled the GST Bill 2025, introducing a crucial amendment in Clause 2(a) that replaces “Government of Jammu and Kashmir” with “Government of Union Territory of J&K”.

The move has sparked controversy, with People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Waheed Para strongly objecting, calling it an implicit endorsement of the 2019 reorganization that stripped J&K of its special status.

“This goes against the resolution for restoring special status and statehood. The government is reinforcing the UT status instead of fighting for our rights,” Para stated, demanding immediate rollback.

The bill’s introduction has reignited the political debate over J&K’s statehood, with opposition leaders accusing the administration of further diluting its constitutional identity.
