Driver Suspended for Offering Namaz During Duty inside Bus

A bus driver employed by the North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) was suspended for stopping the vehicle and offering prayers with passengers on board. The incident occurred on April 29 when the driver, Nayaz Mulla, halted the bus near Gabbur Cross on the outskirts of Hubballi during a scheduled journey from Hangal to Vishalgad. A passenger captured the act on video and shared it on social media, prompting widespread circulation and swift action from authorities.

NWKRTC Managing Director Priyanga M confirmed that a preliminary order for suspension was issued after verifying the authenticity of the claim. The transport corporation emphasized its commitment to service norms and passenger convenience. Karnataka Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy supported the suspension, stating that no religious practices would be entertained in the future that hinder duty obligations. He also noted the potential damage such actions could cause to the state’s transport image.

The minister ordered further investigations and instructed the NWKRTC management to conduct an immediate inquiry. The divisional controller from Haveri, Vijaykumar G, confirmed the disciplinary measures taken against the driver, citing a direct violation of service conduct. Multiple passengers had submitted complaints to authorities following the incident. NWKRTC’s stance is that while they respect the right to practice one’s faith, religious practices should not interfere with operational duties. The incident highlights the importance of adhering to service norms and prioritizing passenger convenience.
