A Delhi court has permitted the withdrawal of a sedition case against former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student leader Shehla Rashid. The case, filed in 2019, pertained to Rashid’s tweets alleging torture by Indian Army personnel in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district.
Rashid had faced charges of promoting enmity between different groups and indulging in acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony. However, the Delhi Police have now been allowed to withdraw the prosecution, as per an order passed by Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Anuj Kumar Singh.
The Indian Army had previously refuted Rashid’s claims, terming them “baseless and unverified.” Rashid, however, had maintained that her tweets were based on information received from individuals in the state.
This development marks a significant turn in the case, which had sparked widespread debate and discussion.
