Uproar in Assembly over J&K Govt’s First Bill, Sajad Lone Walks Out

The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly witnessed a heated debate on Monday as the National Conference-led government introduced its maiden bill, the Jammu & Kashmir Goods and Services (Amendment) Act-2025. Peoples Conference chairman Sajad Gani Lone strongly opposed the bill, alleging that it confirms the Union Territory status of J&K.

Lone stormed out of the House, stating that the bill is a clear approval of J&K’s conversion into a Union Territory. PDP leader and MLA Waheed-ur-Rehman Para also raised objections, emphasizing that the bill legitimizes the post-August 5 developments and weakens the demand for restoration of special status and statehood.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah responded to the opposition, stating that J&K is already a Union Territory, whether they like it or not. He added that removing the word “UT” from the bill would not change the status of J&K.

Despite the opposition’s protest, the bill was passed by voice vote, with support from NC, Congress, and allied parties. The development highlights the ongoing debates and tensions surrounding J&K’s status and the implications of the August 5 changes….
