Khrew-Tral Road Proposal Gets Thumbs Up from Locals, Environmentalists Sound Alarm

Srinagar, March 19 (The Kashmir Eye): The residents of Tral and Khrew Township have welcomed the government’s proposal to construct a road connecting Khrew Town with Tral over the Vashturavan mountain. The proposed road aims to provide a direct link between the two towns, reducing travel time and distance significantly.

The project was initially introduced a few years ago but was stalled due to unknown reasons. However, during a recent assembly session, local MLAs, including Retired Justice Hasnain Masoodi and Rafiq Ahmed Naik, raised concerns about the stalled project and requested the government to resume work on the road.

In response, the government announced plans to construct a road from Srinagar to Pahalgam, passing through Khrew and Tral. The proposed road would not only connect Khrew and Tral but also provide a direct link between Srinagar and Pahalgam, reducing the distance by 30 kilometers.

While the project requires forest clearance and funding, residents are enthusiastic about the potential economic benefits and improved connectivity. The proposed road would boost economic and social development in the region, providing easier access to markets, healthcare, and education.

However, environmental activists have expressed concerns about the project’s potential impact on the ecosystem and biodiversity. The project’s fate now hangs in the balance, awaiting forest clearance and funding. (TKE)
